Georg Buchner - Danton's Tod

Danton's Tod is probably Büchners most famous play. In the marriage of the reign of terror, the French Revolution degenerated more and more to a mass spectacle. The executions were startings for the leasurement of / leasing one’s window seats, pastry and alcohol found a ready market / went fast. The idea of freedom met a brute power struggle, whose protagonists were Danton and Robespierre.
Georg Büchner describes both of them in the condition of exhaustion, doers/actors of a gigantic feast, whose main attraction was the guillotine. This terror was an unknown excitement for this first mass society, dying in public became a carnival / fair attraction. The dream of a more just world had come to an end, Danton and Robespierre themselves had already become unconscious figures, who were not capable of stopping the stream of destruction anymore. After having seen enough of death, for the masses a new area of economized ways of life initiates.
