Michel Torino 2009 Wines (Calchaqui Valley, Argentina)

Sligro offer: each bottle €2.95
From the 2006 vintage, all Michel Torino vineyards have been certified organic.
Salta province, in the foothills of the Andes, north east Argentina, is currently "where it's all happening", particularly in the most scenic region of Cafayata, situated at 1700m above sea level, basking in splendid isolation surrounded by desert. Vineyards are planted at over 2000m with breathtaking mountain scenery.
The vines get 350 days of glorious sunshine per year, however, at this altitude there is a consistent breeze to cool things down. This sunny but cool climate, combined with the rocky and sandy soil, plenty of mountain water, is an ideal environment for growing vines. The vineyards are some of the highest in the world. The speciality of the area is the wonderfully scented version of the Torrontes grape, these are accompanied by Chardonnay, Purple-hued Malbec, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Surrounded by a scenery of ancient vineyards, amidst the Cafayate Valley, the winery flaunts all the magnificence of colonial architecture, with wide large galleries by the attractive bell tower. Its origin dates back from 1892, when two Catalonian brothers, David and Salvador Michel, resolved to devote their lives to winemaking in this region. Later on, David Michel married Gabriela Torino , and that was the origin of this prestigious and well-known venue: the Michel Torino Hermanos Winery.

REVIEWS
Wine magazine recently awarded the Michel Torino Don David Malbec Reserve 2nd place and 95 points in their Argentine Malbec tasting writing "Nice intensity of liquorice fruit with good concentration ... modern, juicy, sexy wine ... a superb palate with length and sweetly toasted oak."
Argentina is gradually doing for Malbec what New Zealand has already done for Sauvignon Blanc - redefining the style and creating sustained worldwide interest. "Malbec is Argentina's calling card. Nowhere else in the world, not even in its home territory of south-west France, does Malbec attain the stature it does here". Simon Woods, FT Weekend, 01/09/01
Customers may well remember the terrific quality of Don David 2002, so good that it came top of the Decanter magazine 'all-comers' tasting, beating many a more glamorous wine in the process.
